How Can I Lock A Door From Outside Without A Key?

It is common knowledge that it is vital to lock your door every time you leave your home or your property. This is to ensure the security and safety of our home as well as our family and the people in the property. In most cases, we lock it while we are still inside or use a key to lock it. But what if you do not have your keys? Don’t worry. There are still ways and means you can do to lock your door from the outside without the key. Keep on reading below to know how.

How to Lock A Door From Outside Without A Key

The first thing you need to address here is to know what type of door lock you have. If you are using a regular, common door knob, you can set the lock in the interior knob by pushing the button or turning the tiny knob in the center, then close the door.

If you are using a deadbolt lock, then you will need to the following steps:

  1. First, you need to prepare string, tape, a pen or a pencil, packing tape, and scissors.
  2. While you are still inside, lock the deadbolt.
  3. Securely place the pen or pencil on top of the deadbolt’s lever using the string or tape. See to it that the pencil or pen is fastened to the lever. Then, unlock the deadbolt.
  4. Cut a piece of the string. Make sure that it is long enough to reach the deadbolt lever inside of the closed door and over the top of your door. You can also use the packing tape instead of the string – secure one end of a long piece to the deadbolt lever. Next, wrap it around the inside of the door. This allows you to pull it from the inside.
  5. Fasten the string to the end of the pencil.
  6. Exit and close the door behind you. Once the door is closed, pull the string. This will engage the deadbolt. Then you will hear a click sound. Check the door to make sure that it is locked. You can opt to cut the hanging string if you prefer it to.

This method may work for a certain time, but doing this all the time can be a bit time-consuming and may not be very safe as potential intruders may try to break-in. Is It Safer To Keep My Keys Into The Door Lock To Prevent Intruders To Pick It From Outside?

Is It Safer To Keep My Keys Into The Door Lock To Prevent Intruders To Pick It From Outside?

Is It Safer To Keep My Keys Into The Door Lock To Prevent Intruders To Pick It From Outside?

Your door key is an essential part of your home or your property as well as your people and family’s safety. Losing them can cause trouble, inconvenience, and may pose a direct threat to your home or property’s security. This is why many people keep their keys on a certain spot in their homes or in their purse. Some others have a hidden spot in their area where only the family members or trusted friends know the location. However, some people prefer to place their keys in the back of their door thinking that doing so can help prevent intruders from entering the property. But is it really safer to keep keys into the door lock? The simple answer is no. Keep on reading below to know why.

Why It Is Not Safe To Keep Keys Into The Door Lock?

If you are among those people who place their keys in the back of their doors, then you may want to change your habit. Leaving your keys into the door lock does not and cannot stop potential burglars and intruders from breaking-in your house. This is because it does nothing to prevent the lock’s cylinder from being turned. Doing so may actually increase the chances of you being robbed, especially if your door type has a window pane. It would be very easy for the intruders to break the window pane, reach for the key, and use it to open the door.

The process is called “fishing”. The burglars will try to turn your door knob. If it is not locked, then it is an easy entry for them. If the door is locked, but they can hear the sound of the key rattling inside the lock, they will “fish” the key and will then gain access to your home.

Prevent this from happening by making sure that you do not leave your keys into the door lock or leave them near the entrance. It is also necessary that you use door locks that can provide high-level security and ensure that your door and locks are properly installed.

What Can You Do To Ensure Safety And Security?

When choosing locks for your home or business, make sure that you choose Grade 1 and Grade 2 locks for commercial and residential use, respectively. These locks passed the standards set by the ANSI or the American National Standards Institute.

And when it comes to installation and repair of locks and keys, make sure to call Absolute Locksmith. How Can You Open A Deadbolted Door Without The Key?

A deadlock is one of the most popular and trusted pin-and-tumbler types of locks. It uses different lengths of pins that only fit a specific key. A deadbolt lock without its correct keys cannot be opened. On the other hand, a deadbolted door is also among the most common ways to secure doors from burglars and intruders. But, what if you lost your keys or left it inside the house? How can you open a deadbolted door without a key? Find out some useful ways to open a deadbolt lock without the key.

How To Open A Deadbolted Door Without Its Key

It can be a bit challenging to open a deadbolted door without a key, but it is not impossible. Here is a useful technique you can use in case you will be needing to open a deadbolted door without its key. First, you need to prepare the following:

  1. Power drill – this is a common tool used for small and big improvements in the house. It is used to create crafts and hole saws for making holes on drywalls. A battery powered drill is more convenient to use, although a corded one can also do the job.
  2. Drill bit – you may want to use the type of drill bit that is specifically designed for metal work. Using either a titanium or a cobalt drill bit can be helpful as you are dealing with a deadbolt, which requires a heavy-duty drill.
  3. Lubricant – this is used to prevent the drill bit from breaking due to excessive heat friction.
  4. Screwdriver – this tool is necessary to reach and unlock the mechanism of the deadbolt. There are many screwdrivers and they vary in size, so make sure that you have one that is long enough to reach the lock and at the same time thin enough to fit into the keyhole.

What To Do?

  1. Place the drill into the tip of the power drill. Ensure that you tighten the tip of the power drill, then apply a lubricant to the drill bit.
  2. Put a considerable amount of lubricant around the deadbolt and the keyhole.
  3. Position the tip of the drill bit on the center of the keyhole then pull the trigger of the power drill.
  4. Exert pressure on the drill to force the drill bit into the keyhole. Once done, apply lubricant to the keyhole to prevent the drill bit from breaking.
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the keyhole and turn. This will unlock the door.

Unlocking a deadbolted door without its key can be a tough job, especially for those who are not trained for such a job. If you ever have this kind of problem, remember to call Absolute Locksmith. Can You Get A Car Key Replaced Without The Original Key?

Can You Get A Car Key Replaced Without The Original Key?

Can You Get A Car Key Replaced Without The Original Key?

Your car key is a one tiny thing that has the power to make or break your day. Why? Well, if you lose your car keys, have it stolen, or got it stuck in the ignition, then that is a disaster for you. You may not be able to go to work, drive your kids to school, or you may get stuck in the middle of the road. So, what can you do if you need to recopy your car key but do not have the original key with you? Can you still get a car key replaced without the car’s original key? The simple answer is yes, but there are some things that you need to do. Keep on reading below to learn more.

How To Get Your Car Key Replacement Without The Original Key?

When you need to make a copy of your car key but do not have the original key, you will need to provide certain information, such as the vehicle’s make, model, and year as well as the vehicle’s identification number (VIN), proof of ownership (vehicle registration or insurance), and whether you are using a transponder key, a key fob, or a traditional mechanical key.

Now that you have all the information and documents needed, you can opt for these two to get your car key replacement: go to your car dealer where you purchased the car or go to a local locksmith.

Your local dealership – if you choose this option, you may need to provide less information as they already have some of the necessary info of you when you purchased the car. The good thing about choosing this option is you can be sure that it is legal and that the key you get is from the car’s company. The downside, however, is it can be expensive as they may charge a premium for the service and at times, may outsource to a local locksmith. Plus, you also need to be there in their office which may take time and can be a little inconvenient for busy people.

Your local locksmith – this option will require you more information as the local locksmith company will need to make sure that you really are the owner of the car or the authorized person. The good thing, though, is that this is more cost effective and you may choose not to go to their physical shop as they could come to your place instead. This is more convenient as you can save time, energy, and effort.

Losing your car keys can be stressful and frustrating. But there is no need to worry. Absolute Locksmith is always ready to help. Our company offers various types of locksmith services, including car key duplication, car key extraction, and more. Simply give us a call and our professional locksmith technicians will be there to help you. We can guarantee excellent work and service as our people in Absolute Locksmith are all licensed and bonded.

Can A Locksmith Legally Make A Key For A Vehicle If The Owner Isn’t There?

Can A Locksmith Legally Make A Key For A Vehicle If The Owner Isn’t There?

Can A Locksmith Legally Make A Key For A Vehicle If The Owner Isn't There?

A locksmith is a professional who is trained to deal with keys – repair, recopy, extraction, programming, and more. Now, with this in mind, many are wondering if a locksmith can legally make a copy of a vehicle’s key without the owner. Well, there is a thin line between what a locksmith can do and would not do, so keep on reading below.

What You Need To Provide To A Locksmith To Duplicate Keys?

A locksmith can easily make a copy of your house or car keys. They were trained and have the proper tools to do so. Unless the key is a DND (Do Not Duplicate), then no doubt, they can make a copy of it. Anyone can bring a key to a locksmith shop and they will make a copy of it without a fuss.  But here’s the catch. Some locksmith companies, like Absolute Locksmith, understand that duplicating keys pose danger to one’s security and safety. This is why we at Absolute Locksmith require some information and proof before we do the job and services required.

If you need to recopy a car key and the vehicle owner is not around, then the locksmith will ask for a letter of authorization as well as the owner’s proof of ownership. Doing so can assure locksmiths that they are not helping people access the car or a property who are not the legal owners. But even if you are the owner of the car, or perhaps a house or building, we will still request you to present some documents, such as:

  • Driver’s license with your address – this is used to verify if the person is the real owner. If their address matches the address of the driver’s license, then it is good to go and the locksmith will duplicate your keys.
  • Proof of billing – this is also another way of verifying if you are the owner or not. You need to present mail, like your electricity bill or even just regular mail. You need to provide this along with a valid ID so the locksmith can proceed with recopying your keys.
  • House or property  title – this is necessary especially when you get locked out of your car or house. One will have to present a proof that they certainly are the owner of the car or house as it will be too dangerous for them to proceed on unlocking the doors if they are not the real owners.

It can be a hassle and quite a pain to present IDs and other documents as proof of ownership, but our clients’ safety and security is something that we value the most. Absolute Locksmith does not only ensure to provide excellent locksmith work and outstanding customer service. We also see to it that our clients are protected and safe and one way to do that is to require proof of ownership and other documents.
